Pride and Prejudice Blu-ray: Best DVDs of March 2009

Pride What it is: The Blu-ray version of the 1995 mini series adapted from Jane Austen's best selling novel, Pride and Prejudice. Set in the 19th century English countryside, Pride and Prejudice is a romantic comedy featuring the rebellious Elizabeth Bennet. Her independent nature threatens the future of her family as she struggles with the role that society has chosen for her (and for all women at that time). With lavish costumes, stately manors, and the beautiful English countryside; Pride and Prejudice is as much a work of art as a work of literature. Finally, fans will be rewarded with the Blu-ray version which brings the novel to life as it was meant to be seen.

Why it's significant: Arguably the best Jane Austen novel adaptation, Pride and Prejudice is not only significant because it paved the way for the Jane Austen adaptations to follow, or because it is an important historical drama, but also because it shows us that the improvements that we have always hoped for in film restoration are finally here. The Blu-ray version is not just a simple transfer to High Definition from the television show or from later DVD releases, instead technicians went back to the original 16mm film and restored it frame by frame. This painstaking process gives us the best version of Pride and Prejudice to date. In this case, a picture speaks a thousand words so see for yourself:

I had been on the fence about whether I really needed to get a Blu-ray version of P&P, since I already have the 10th Anniversary Limited Collectors Edition (with the cute, but impractical, packaging). Your "before and after" stills have sold me--that's an amazing difference!

Given how yellowed and blurry the DVD shots are, I have to wonder if the improvement in going to Blu-Ray has less to do with the virtues of Blu-Ray (which are many, no doubt) and more to do with what seems to be an utterly crappy DVD version.

Of course, I suppose that I've gotten spoiled by DVD being so much better than VHS-- I can't imagine that a competently produced DVD could look so bad.

You've convinced me that if I ever remarry and am forced to sit through this again, it will be the Blu-ray version.

Why are you using photos for illustration of the blu-ray version which aren't even as big as the DVD release? And the one's that you're comparing it too are weird; my DVD version is in 16:9 format and vastly better in color and definition than those.

It doesn't much matter, as I'm going to get the blu-ray version anyway, but the pictures that you're using aren't helpful at all. (I hope that this doesn't come across as snarky, I don't mean it that way, I'm just suggesting that full-resolution screen shots versus the best DVD version would be much more helpful in figuring out how soon I need to go buy the blu-ray version.)

Looks like the smaller version is the old 4:3 television format.

Looks like about par for the course for that type of media, especially uncorrected for contrast.

"arguably the best"???

What are you smoking?

The 1979/80 BBC miniseries version was a far superior script. And better actors.

None of this "Darcy in a pond" cheesecake silliness.

I should know, after all.

While the remaster, as scraped onto here, is indeed much better and visually more attractive, I would like to point out that the image definition is still far below standards you'd expect on BluRay.

It IS 16mm after all and the detail we all want to see on Hi-Def was lost at the moment the image went on the film negative.
It wasnt hard to see the difference between 16 and 35 mm on NTSC, it's not hard to see it here. Putting the movie on BluRay is overkill.
I'm sure you could look closely and see image improvement on BR v DVD but there isnt going to be that much difference at a normal viewing distance.

You've convinced me that if I ever remarry and am forced to sit through this again, it will be the Blu-ray version.
