Best DVDs of February: Summer Heights High- The Complete First Season

Shh What is it: Summer Heights High- The Complete First Season is the original new HBO series that follows the life of three very different narcissistic characters.  The mockumentary follows Mr. G, the high school drama teacher, Ja'mie, the 16 year old who views her year at the public school as giving back to the community and Jonah, the delinquent coming off of two previous school expulsions.  The season follows the flamboyant drama teacher, as he directs his high school production of a teen dying of a drug overdose, where he awards himself the lead.  The cameras also follow stuck up Ja'mie as she stages a formal dance in order to use her popularity and show up the public school girls.  While Jonah just wants to break dance and can't fight the urge to talk back to the authority and get into fights. The only catch... all three characters are played by the same actor, the Australian writer/performer Chris Lilley.

Why it's Significant:  Summer Heights High is a hilarious mockumentary, starring the talented Chris Lilley.  He takes on three very different, engaging characters that you want to watch develop from the very first episode.  His ability to touch on every taboo subject with underlying satire, while also creating very real, tender moments, shows an element of heart that draws in any viewer.  Summer Heights High is a refreshingly funny show, starring the brilliant Chris Lilley. - Sara Lange

“Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist”: Best DVDs of February 2009

Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist What it is: The story of a recently heartbroken musician, Nick, who sets out on a quest to get over his ex (Tish) and in the process meets Norah. Over the course of one night they chase the mythical “Where’s Fluffy?” band through Manhattan while trying to survive their exes, their friends, and the madness of the city. Will Nick fall for Norah or go back to Tish? Only time will tell in Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist.

Why it's Significant: It’s this generation’s answer to teen movies infused with music. For those of us who grew up with the likes of John Hughes and Cameron Crowe, we know the importance of music in a movie. Mix tapes may have turned into burned CD’s but the sentiment remains – music moves us. With a quirky cast of characters and a unique take on the “broken heart healed” love story, this movie offers that little something special by positioning a love of music as the impetus for finding true love. Plus the soundtrack delivers on its promise with an eclectic mix of angst-ridden rock from the likes of Vampire Weekend, Band of Horses, and We Are Scientists. -- Lesley

Celebrity Blog: Kimberly Miguel Mullen - Dance and Be Fit

2007-08-22_ytc_hawaii_2463

Hi, I'm Kimberly Miguel Mullen and I'm honored to be blogging for you Amazon readers! My background is in dance and I believe that dance can have tremendous effects on your overall health. And what workout can be more fun?!

I helped Acacia create a dance/fitness line of DVDs called Dance and Be Fit: Brazilian Body and Lower Body Burn. And just in case you're saying to yourself, I can’t dance! Can this still work for me? I have your answer!

The beautiful thing about dancing is that there is no right or wrong way to move your body. For this reason, every body can dance. If you can walk, you can dance. What I love about the dances in the Brazilian Body DVD is that the movements are organic to how the body naturally moves. The success of  the dances and how you execute them rely on your own individual expression not in the technicality. Dance dvds are great because they provide you with the inspiration towards discovering your own personal expression so that you can make it your own.

For beginners, my suggestion is to pay close attention to the small details of how your instructor’s body is positioned. Scan your body from head to toe, begin with the feet and then work up the body from there layering all the different body parts on top of one another. When you feel confident with the footwork, focus on the ankles, then knees, hips, torso, arms, hands, neck, and the head. Stick to practicing the basic footwork for as long as you need in order to feel confident in the step. Every thing in dance stems from the feet. Happy Dancing Feet!

Where did the inspiration for these workouts come from?

Dance is one of the most ancient forms of physical expression. Historically, people dance for many reasons; to pray, to celebrate, to harvest, to heal, etc. During my travels to Brazil and training with Master teachers, I experienced a physically active culture with no separation between fitness and dance. For the Dance and Be Fit: Brazilian Body DVD, the goal was to create a fun and effective workout highlighting Brazilian dance forms that celebrate life and the physical beauty of every size and shaped body. Viver Brasil!

What’s your background in dance & fitness? When/how did you start out?

I was involved in music and dance my entire upbringing. Growing up, I played the piano, alto saxophone and studied jazz and tap dance. I became active in coordinating the student-base dance organization for my university and was exposed to the most beautiful and talented dance teachers from all over the world. This inspired 15 years of dedicated dance training and research--nationally and abroad. Dance was the perfect medium for me to combine all aspects of my physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.

What’s the best way to begin a fitness routine if I haven’t exercised in a long time?

It can be scary to jump into a fitness regimen after not having exercised in a long time. Start off slow. Simply bring your awareness to the simplest forms of physical activity that you already do in your day-to-day routine--like walking, lifting, carrying, etc. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Walk instead of drive. Then, seek physical activities that are fun and engaging that take the attention off of exercise and divert you toward learning something new. Dancing is a perfect way to exercise without even realizing it!

Is stretching really important? What are the benefits of stretching? Are there stretching “guidelines” I should follow to get the most benefit?

I love stretching and I feel a big difference in my body if I miss one day.  Appropriate stretching is important to do before and after any workout because of the many benefits--if executed properly. Stretching 1) facilitates breathing 2) oxygenates the blood, 3) increases the flexibility in the muscles and joints 4) helps prevent injuries, 5) increases blood flow to the brain, and much more. When becoming motivated to begin a fitness regimen, I recommend starting your program with stretching. It’s easy and accessible. No exercise equipment required. You can stretch any time, any place. Do not force stretches beyond your capacity to maintain proper alignment in your body. For example, in the runner's lunge stretch, your knee should be bent in a 90 degree angle in alignment with your first two toes. Your knee should not surpass your foot. Hold your stretches for 5 to 20 seconds. If the tension disappears or decreases, increase your stretch, repeat, and hold. If you are experiencing pain, ease off the stretch. Do not over do it. Happy Stretching!

I hope you begin this new year with a positive outlook on fitness and health! Enjoy the workout!

Sundance Film Festival (Part 2)

Sundance2In Sundance Film Festival Wrap-Up (Part 1), I gave you an overview of the Festival as well as the complete list of winners.  Today,  I'll tell you about the films I saw, how you can see films that were shown there, which celebrities I spotted, and what you really need to know if you are planning to attend the Festival next year.

For people who love lists, here are all 16 of the films I saw (in order of viewing) with a very brief description:

  4. Shorts Program 4 (Included winning short "Short Term 12")
  5. Shrink (Kevin Spacey as a burned-out psychiatrist)
  6. Brief Interviews with Hideous Men (Directed by John Krasinski of "The Office")

Continuing with the lists, here are some of the celebrities I spotted:

  • Kevin Spacey

  • Benjamin Bratt
  • Virginia Madsen
  • Sam Rockwell
  • KeKe Palmer (of Akeelah and the Bee and Shrink)
  • Bobcat Goldwaithe

And some of the celebs I missed (some left early to attend the Inauguration):

  • Robert Redford (of course)
  • Mariah Carey
  • Mo'Nique
  • Zooey Deschanel
  • Marisa Tomei
  • Uma Thurman
  • Ben Foster
  • Gael Garcia Bernal
  • Don Cheadle
  • Sting

Keep in mind that there are over 200 films at Sundance each year.  The Festival offers a variety of passes and ticket-buying options, most of which are divided by "A Package" and "B Package," with "A" representing the first half of the Festival and "B" representing the second half of the Festival.  (There is also a Package that includes the entire 11 days of the Festival.)  Passes go on sale in October and you can choose your films in late December.  (Both passes and tickets are picked up in Park City at the Sundance Ticket Office.)  You can also buy individual tickets the day of the screenings ("Wait List") but, be warned, you may be waiting a long time and may not even get tickets.  A few helpful hints:

  • Buy Passes and tickets early.  You don't want to (literally) be standing in the cold for tickets that may not even be available. They go on sale in October.
  • Allow PLENTY of time to get from film to film.  There are free shuttles and buses that can get you where you want to go but you still have to plan accordingly.
  • Book hotels or condos as early as possible.  And make sure you tell lots of people you are going.  You never know when a friend of a friend will have an extra bed (for free) at their 18 person condo.  Ditto for the parties.
  • Bring your glasses to every screening.  You never know when a film will suddenly spring subtitles on you.
  • Eat well and snack often.  Sundance is a marathon, people, and you can only eat so much popcorn.
  • Don't forget the Chapstick.  (Trust me on that one.)
  • Be friendly and polite.  The Festival is a fun time and you never know who you could be sitting next to on a Shuttle.

Start planning now and I'll see you at Sundance next year! -- E. Christian Moore

Celebrity Blog: Leslie Sansone - Staying Fit

Here’s Leslie’s message for health and fitness in the New Year, and also check out the Q&A with Leslie clip below. Thanks Leslie!  - Lisanne

I sincerely believe that the secret to any successful venture is that there is NO secret! For example, if you’ve got weight loss goals, the best way to achieve them is by taking baby steps toward a healthier lifestyle. Simple changes in your daily routine will contribute to weight loss.  That in itself is a motivator. Small successes motivate us to move toward larger accomplishments.  This rings true in all areas of life, and it’s especially true when it comes to our own health and fitness.  A healthy eating and exercise regime really picks up momentum when you notice your energy level increase and when you no longer have to unbutton your pants at the dinner table!

If you need a little motivation booster, try this “one or two” plan and expect results:  Leave “one or two” bites of food on your plate at every meal. This cuts about two hundred calories from your daily intake.  And, walk “one or two” miles a day. It’s not complicated or overwhelming, but the benefits of moving will show up in many wonderful ways.  Your muscle tone will improve, and your pants will fit better!

As I tear off today’s calendar page, I’m thinking about the message I’d like to convey for 2009.  It’s not a diet or a workout plan. It’s a sincere hope that we all find the motivation and momentum that will carry us successfully through our attempted endeavors in the shiny New Year!  May God bless each and every one of you with good health and a happy heart!

Gratefully yours,

Leslie

Best DVDs of February 2009: "Let The Right One In"

Cartaz1

What it is: Let The Right One In is not just a vampire movie.  This mood-setting movie is about friendship, youth and relationships.  And, yes, friendship, youth and relationships do get a little complicated when you are a 300 year old vampire in a 12 year old's body.  Based on the best-selling Swedish book, Låt Den Rätte Komma In (Let Me In) by John Ajvide Lindqvist, this movie slowly infects you with a mood and tone that makes it nearly impossible to simply catalog the movie as a vampire movie.  The film has been knocking audiences dead after winning many awards on the film fest circuit including Best Narrative Feature (Tribeca Film Festival).  Overall, the film masterfully balances the dynamics of the darker side of vampires within a modern and realistic setting.

Why It is Significant:  The movie is significant for its ability to hold you in a mood for the entire length of the movie.  Let The Right One In exemplifies how a movie doesn’t have to be loud with rusty and bloody lawn mower blades to haunt your thoughts days after you leave the dark theater.   In addition, there are minor plots within the story, each adding their own unbearable tension to the overall draw of the movie. Think you are beyond liking vampire movies?  Me too.  But, this movie had me wishing I could move to Sweden in order to befriend a strong vampire as my own personal wingman.  And, hey, watch the movie now so when the American remake (directed by Matt Reeves) comes out in 2010 you can brag that you already saw the original Swedish version.

Amazon.com Review
The enduring popularity of the vampire myth rests, in part, on sexual magnetism. In Let the Right One In, Tomas Alfredson's carefully controlled, yet sympathetic take on John Ajvide Lindqvist's Swedish bestseller-turned-screenplay, the protagonists are pre-teens, unlike the fully-formed night crawlers of HBO’s True Blood or Catherine Hardwicke’s Twilight (both also based on popular novels). Instead, 12-year-old Oskar (future heartbreaker Kåre Hedebrant) and Eli (Lina Leandersson) enter into a deadly form of puppy love. The product of divorce, Oskar lives with his harried mother, while his new neighbor resides with a mystery man named Håkan (Per Ragnar), who takes care of her unique dietary needs. From the wintery moment in 1982 that the lonely, towheaded boy spots the strange, dark-haired girl skulking around their outer-Stockholm tenement, he senses a kindred spirit. They bond, innocently enough, over a Rubik's Cube, but little does Oskar realize that Eli has been 12 for a very long time. Meanwhile, at school, bullies torment the pale and morbid student mercilessly. Through his friendship with Eli, Oskar doesn't just learn how to defend himself, but to become a sort of predator himself, begging the question as to whether Eli really exists or whether she represents a manifestation of his pent-up anger and resentment. Naturally, the international success of Lindqvist's fifth feature, like Norway's chilling Insomnia before it, has inspired an American remake, which is sure to boast superior special effects, but can't possibly capture the delicate balance he strikes here between the tender and the terrible. --Kathleen C. "Rachel Getting Married": Best DVDs of February 2009

Rachel What it is: Rachel Getting Married is a heartfelt, intimate drama about personal crises, tragedy, and family. When Kym (Anne Hathaway - Academy Award and Golden Globe Nominee, Best Actress), returns home from an umpteenth trip to rehab for the wedding of her sister Rachel (Rosemarie DeWitt), she becomes the catalyst for long-simmering tensions in the family dynamic. The wedding couple’s group of friends and relatives have gathered for a joyful weekend, but Kym puts the past on display and the wedding celebration takes a turn. Writer Jenny Lumet and director Jonathon Demme manage to paint a painful, and sometimes funny, but very believable family portrait about the pain and joy of being human. With rich characters and solid performances from the entire cast, this is a a wedding movie like no other.

Why It's Significant: If there ever was a movie to put an actor in "The Actor" category, this is it. Anne Hathaway is vulnerable, funny, real, and her performance makes this movie. You want to hate her flawed character, but you just can't thanks to Jenny's excellent writing and Anne's spot-on performance. Anne's been nominated (and won) for several awards, and critics have been praising her - but it is warranted. Yes, the princess is all grown up. I also enjoyed the way in which the film is shot, which is almost like a home video  - but in a good way that really makes it feel like you are a guest as well at this painful, strange, yet oddly cool wedding weekend.

And okay, I know I shouldn't bring up Anne's personal life, but I just can't resist: Her now ex-boyfriend gets sent to prison for fraud, and she gets nominated for an Oscar? Talk about a girl's best revenge. Karma rocks. Go Anne. - Lisanne

"Changeling": Best DVDs of February 2009

ChangelingWhat it is: In Changeling, single mom Christine Collins (Angelina Jolie) battles the corrupt LAPD when her kidnapped son is returned, and it's clearly not her son. Captain J.J. Jones (Burn Notice's Jeffrey Donovan), however, wants the case closed and continues trying to convince Christine she's deluded, going so far as to have her thrown in a mental institution. John Malkovich plays a sympathetic pastor bent on exposing the LAPD. The film is based on the Wineville Chicken Coop case of 1928; a "changeling" is, in folklore, an offspring of a fairy or other creature that is left in place of a human child. The film is nominated for three Oscars, including Best Actress for Jolie.

Why it's significant: As hard as it can be to separate Jolie's celebrity from her acting, she does her best to disappear into the role, and she pulls it off. Unlike her role in the actioner Wanted, released the same year, she casts off the sensual pouts, snarls, and leers; instead she inhabits a dainty, soft-spoken, trusting mother (with a really gaunt frame) who is confused by the law enforcement's reluctance to serve and protect. I admit at first I didn't want to watch this film (maybe one day on DVD), given its subject matter and the fact that I'd already Wikipedia'd the Wineville case to find out everything that happened. But I came away impressed and pretty astonished that this would really happen (as they say, "You can't write this stuff.") Clint Eastwood, who directed the film and composed the score, gives a one-two punch of two solid films in a single year, the other being Gran Torino. -- Ellen

Jonas Brothers, Don't Let This Happen To You!

IdolSo the guy was a star. Hit record, hit TV show, big movie, magazine covers, endless women ... And then, suddenly, he took off his shirt and no one cared. Maybe then he became a firefighter. Maybe he went to rehab. Maybe he got a job on a cruise ship. Maybe he became obsessed with colon cleansing. Maybe all this and more happened a bunch of guys, including the ones on "Confessions of a Teen Idol," a new show on VH1, a channel that seems to have embraced all manner of celebrity aftermath, from goofy (Surreal Life) to tragic (Celebrity Rehab). Confessions is somewhere in between, tinged with regrets, as well as a touching optimism about the future. I'm hooked (new episodes are here).

If you ever put a poster in your locker in the '80s or '90s, you know the guys on this series. Probably the most famous are Christopher Atkins (from The Blue Lagoon to poolbuilding) and David Chokachi and Jeremy Jackson (from Baywatch to oblivion, or in Jackson's case, meth). Eric Nies (The Real World, The Grind) has become a hippie (he's the colon guy). Adrian Zmed (T.J. Hooker, Grease 2) is working the high seas. Jamie Walters went from "How Do You Talk to An Angel" to fatherhood and firefighting. The guy I didn't know (until I did a little research) was Billy Hufsey. Check out this clip of him duetting with Gene Anthony Ray in this clip from Fame (the TV show). Dude could dance, that's for sure. But will he -- or any of these guys -- find what they're looking for? "Fame's a funny thing," says Confessions executive producer and host Scott Baio (no stranger to teen idoldom himself). "You don't know how much you love it until it's gone." -- Stephanie Reid-Simons, Amazon Video On Demand

Celebrity Post: Elisabeth Halfpapp - "Sculpt" for optimum fitness

2008_04_02_YTC_Exhale_Core_Fusion_0938  Hello Amazon readers! I'm Elisabeth Halfpapp and I am the co-creator of the Core Fusion fitness programs made famous at Exhale spas. I have over 20 years experience in the health & wellness field. My partner, Fred DeVito, and I are committed to bringing our students--and you--a fitness program that is both manageable with your busy schedules and also effective and results-oriented. With my extensive teaching background, I've come across many questions that I think may help you manuever the fitness world and more specifically, see if the Core Fusion method is right for you!

1. What results can I expect to see from this dvd?
The results of Exhale: core fusion body sculpt are long lean powerful legs, high round lifted gluteals, washboard abdominals, and toned upper body.  You will lose inches! This program will prepare you and enhance any other sport or activity that you do.  This is a lifestyle fitness program that always leaves you with a relaxed, calm energy.  These results will happen within 4-6 weeks, if you practice the full 5 ten minute sessions (50 minutes total) 3/week.

2. What makes core fusion different than a standard sculpting program?
There are consistent reminders of the position and alignment which results in doing less repetitions.  Also we do precise, intense movements to strengthen the muscles followed immediately by stretching the previous strengthened muscles.  This will enable you to find your deepest, hard to reach muscles. We use more of the body as its own resistance instead of heavy weights.

3. What are the Lotte Berk Method elements?  What is your experience with this Method?
The Lotte Berk Method elements are blended in throughout each ten minute session.   These elements are using the chair as a barre for thigh/gluteal sessions and the curl.  The barre work comes out of Lotte’s dance background. Fred & I managed the Lotte Berk Method for 22 years (1980-2002).  During our time there we taught about 30 classes/wk each, lead the teacher trainings, and assisted in developing/enhancing this Method.

4.What is different about the curl?
The curl is an orthopedic exercise for the back (Lotte had degenerated discs in her spine from a fall off a stage and developed this exercise with her rehab doctors) that uses bracing and stabilization of the back and abdominal muscles.   While the abdominals engage and strengthen, the back muscles are stretching orthopedically.  Most back issues and pain arise out of weak abdominals and tight back muscles.  Instead of using momentum to engage the abdominals like a crunch or a sit up, the lower back braces into the floor while the upper body does one crunch up to get shoulder blades off the floor keeping back of the waist on the floor.   Then once your core is held still, the arms and legs move out of this stabilized held abdominal wall.   This creates a long lean core (your core is everything from under the chest to the hips including front, back and sides of body) with well defined abdominals.

5. I have a tendency to bulk my muscles when I engage in sculpting programs.  Will Core Fusion Body Sculpt bulk my muscles?
You will develop long lean defined muscles because of the balance of strength and immediate stretch of the muscular group working.

6. What equipment do I need?
Pair of light weights from 2-5 lbs. You can also do the Upper Body Sculpt without weights; Sturdy chair or counter your hip height; Exercise mat or thick carpeted surface; Towel or stretch belt; Playground ball 7” in diameter for bonus track

7. Is it normal to feel your back during the fly ups or the curl?
Yes, you will feel a stretch in your back muscles because as you contract your abdominals, the opposite antagonistic muscular group (your back muscles) will stretch.  You will feel vertical stretch of the back muscles above your waist.  If you feel discomfort below your waist horizontally across the lower back, either stay holding onto your legs with your back of waist on floor or work higher off your waist holding onto your legs the entire time.

Try this sculpting method with us and you won't be disappointed!
