Our Exclusive Interview with Colin Firth

Colin Firth used to be the sleaze. He impregnated Saffron Burrows in Circle of Friends (then assumed she'd get an abortion), paid to marry Gwyneth Paltrow in Shakespeare in Love, and schemed his way into many a bed in Valmont.

We've all forgotten about that now, of course, ever since he climbed out of that pond in Pride & Prejudice, which has sprung him into the uptight romantic leading man category he's since enjoyed with Bridget Jones' Diary, Love Actually, and many more.

I got the chance to interview Colin in New York where he was promoting When Did You Last See Your Father?, a Sony Pictures Classics release in which he stars with Jim Broadbent as a writer reflecting on his relationship with his father in the weeks leading up to the father's death. Here's the video of our interview, also available as a podcast. Find out why he took the role, what his favorite film experiences have been, and why he can't even watch Pride and Prejudice. -- Ellen

Very good interview. I love When Did You Last See Your Father. It’s a different type of film. It’s slow, gentle, and sad. I find it interesting how the director uses mirrors to reflect what the characters are feeling internally. It was intriguing to hear Colin Firth's favorite/most enjoyable to make films. I'm surprised he didn't mention Bridget Jones’s Diary and Where the Truth Lies. It figures that two of the ones he mentioned are still not available on DVD in the USA so I have not been able to see them (A Month in the Country and Tumbledown).

I was enjoying this video interview but it stops and wants to restart at 3:02 in. Hope this can be remedied so we can all enjoy the rest.

Okay, it finally loaded fully. BTW AMITC was available once and Tumbledown is available as a Region 2. It just came out in 2007 on DVD,so there's hope.

Great interview with my favorite actor! One of my favorite Colin Firth movies is "The Secret Laughter of Women" which he made with Nia Long. I'd love to get my hands on the DVD.

The Firth thing I ever saw him in was "Another Country" with Rupert Everett and Cary Elwes. I fell in love with Rupert Everett, but Colin came in a very close second.
