Sydney Pollack, 1934-2008

Sydney Pollack

More sad news from the world of entertainment: Sydney Pollack has died of cancer at the age of 73. Multi-talented as a director, producer, and actor, Pollack garnered the most fame for directing a number of well-regarded films with the biggest stars and winning the Best Director Oscar for 1985's Out of Africa.  Just a few of his other films included Tootsie (with Dustin Hoffman), The Way We Were (with Robert Redford and Barbra Streisand), Jeremiah Johnson (Redford again), and They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (with Jane Fonda). Pollack was also a prolific producer, and he executive-produced Recount, which was just shown on HBO. But Pollack might be remembered most fondly as an onscreen actor. His most significant recent role was in Michael Clayton (which he also produced), and I always think of his scene playing Hoffman's exasperated agent in Tootsie ("You were a tomato! A tomato doesn't have logic!"). --David

"Nobody does vegetables like me!" Great clip; thanks David.

Elegantly done: very nice write-up.

He'll definitely be missed.

He will be missed. He directed one of my favorite movies "The Yakuza." It's an excellent martial arts movie with on "artsy" twist that Pollack admitted got him in some trouble with the studio. If you haven't seen the movie buy the disc and listen to his commentary.
